Tree Surgery You Need To Know

Pruning trees can be useful for making adjustments to the tree, to maintain its safety, remove dead branches or just keep an eye on growth. It is also used for shaping the size of the tree and produce better flowers, fruit or timber. Proper pruning can help maintain the appearance, health and safety of your trees. Our tree surgeon Coventry goes deeper on the terms used by tree care professionals.

It’s important for clients to have a basic understanding of commonplace terms used when describing tree work. This way they can know what is being discussed, and share their thoughts and ideas in discussions with the arboriculturist. It’s not just the height of the tree that is affected by pruning, but also the shape. A crown thin won’t reduce height but may make a tree fatter instead, while a crown lift to 4m could make your tree thinner and longer.

Although pruning varies depending on the type of plant, there are 3 main options. Click through for an outline of the most common terms if you want to know what they mean.

Be careful not to harm already protected trees. The wilful felling or even pruning a protected tree without consent from your Local Planning Authority may be a criminal offence.

Check with your town’s Tree Officer and Planning Department to make sure you can do work on certain trees or historical areas before proceeding.

Definitions You Should Know

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning is one of bonsai’s most challenging aspects. It often requires the removal of smaller branches, usually on the outer part of the branch, to give each branch space to grow evenly. Crown thinning is usually implemented for broad-leaved trees. It does not alter the tree’s shape or size, but it does prevent liability. You should remove material systematically from throughout the tree, never more than 30%.

As the crown of the tree grows, taller, it tends to shade some of the branches. Shading on some branches can keep them from growing large enough to eventually support their own weight. To avoid this problem it’s common for some parts of the tree to be trimmed back (crown thinning) so they’ll get more light and will grow quicker, making them stronger.

Crown Lifting and Raising

Branch removal is a job where the branches from the lowest levels are removed from a tree. Crown lifting should never be performed with the intention of removing large branches. This can have unintended consequences and lead to a decline or more losses down the line.

Crown lifting should be limited on older trees. The best thing to do is remove it from the secondary branches and shortening of the main branches, not removing it all together. Crown lifting is a technique used for allowing more light to penetrate to areas closer to the tree, or for safe access under the crown. The minimum should be 67%, but never more than 15%.

Reducing the Crown of A Tree

The branch height and/or branch spread can be decreased by trimming. There are a number of different reasons you might need to use Crown Reduction. This can be due to branch breaking, adapting the tree for its environment, or light impact, among other potential problems. The final product should include as much as possible of the original framework. In order to trim a tooth, it is important to have a clear view of the half of the tooth you want to remove whilst keeping as much intact as possible.

Crown reductions need to be small and usually not bigger than 100mm diameter unless there is a compelling reason for that. A “reduction” can be measured using numbers or written as a list of the items being removed, e.g. Crown has been reduced by 2.0m in height and 1.0 meter in spread, to dimensions of 18 meters high by 11 meters wide. Crown reduction is not suitable for all sorts of animal species. One needs to be careful while interpreting it as topping. Topping can lead to a lot of unintended consequences and we should be more careful about the meaning and implication behind this term.…

When You Have An Emergency Tree Issue

The structural integrity of the plants in your garden may be compromised over time, for a number of common reasons. Tree infestations by pests, diseases, and simple things like weather are quite common. When you notice something is wrong with your trees- such as them declining, they can pose a risk to your property and other things. So make sure you get them “fixed” ASAP if you see anything out of the ordinary.

If you think that your tree might be posing a safety hazard or if you see these 3 signs on your tree then it’s important that you call us immediately to remove your tree.

Tree’s That Lean

One sign of potential damage to a tree is if it starts leaning to one side. It can be hard to tell sometimes, but if the tree begins leaning abruptly, it might be due to problems with its root system. Do you have a tree in your garden that has started to lean? You should contact an arborist or a tree surgeon North London as soon as possible; this will make the arborist prevent the tree from falling and causing any damage to your property.

Damage To Trees Roots

Tree roots are the foundation of the tree and provide it with water, stability and help distribute nutrients. They also can damage underground pipes and house foundations. If you see damage on your tree’s root system, this could indicate that it may not be as healthy as before. Root systems are very important for trees, if you notice any damage, it’s time to call an emergency arborist. Healthy root systems make a huge difference to a tree’s long-term success. Keep an eye on root growth and give it the attention it needs – or risk losing your tree.

Notable Damage To Your Tree

If you find yourself with damaged trees, it is best to look for professional help. Lots of environmental factors can prolong the life of tree damage, so it’s important to know the degree to which the tree has been damaged. If most of the tree is damaged, it’s probably best to remove it before the structure collapses. If only a small portion of the tree is damaged, they may be able to recover without any issue. When you look outside, if you notice any trees that might be damaged, it’s best to consult a professional. By getting it diagnosed early on, it can be replaced or removed to prevent dangerous accidents.

Large Tree Branches Are Dying

Although trees add a lot of beauty to your backyard, the structural integrity could deteriorate after years of time. When canopies on trees begin to decrease, they increase the potential for safety issues. The decline of trees is tough to decipher sometimes. But if you think about what may have caused it, you could start to narrow down the possibilities. For example, the wind blowing away at it could lead to tornadoes or hurricanes which can cause significant disruption or disease outbreaks to occur in your trees…

Why A Tree Stump Should Be Removed

Provision stump removal at the time of tree surgery, as stumps may become problematic after you take away the tree.

An arborist should grind the stump of an uprooted tree to remove it entirely since doing otherwise would be unsightly.

Allowing stumps to remain in the ground can lead to mould, fungus, and pests, which all poses a risk.

Some tree stumps may seem harmless at the time, but they pose dangers to humans and animals. To prevent complications you can take action like covering them in dirt or placing spikes atop of them.

Tree stumps can present a safety risk, and be a potential liability.

Tree stumps may be harmless but they don’t last long. After a while, they may become a threat and pose an injury risk. Tree stumps should be taken out as soon as possible especially if they’re not yours!

Stumps can pose a huge problem for garden machines.

Thousands of lawnmowers are discarded every year because of damaged crankshafts. When the blade gets trapped by an obstacle, this usually ends up destroying what used to be your working machine.

Tree stumps may be decorative, but they can also create a lot of gardening work.

If you want to cut the time it takes to mow your garden, get rid of the stumps that are left in the ground. This will allow you to get on with your work without too much trouble.

Tree stumps can be surprisingly invasive and extract all the nutrients in soil.

Are you finding that plants keep coming back on their own after you cut them? This is likely the case if you don’t want it to affect your garden aesthetics or soil health.

Newly planted roses need to be well-watered to prevent nutrient leaching from your soil. Furthermore, when you have a garden filled with diverse plants, it is usually good to plan ahead so there is no unplanned growth.

The cost of removing a tree stump is relative to its size and lastly, what company you’re hiring. In general, the bigger the stump, the more it will cost to have removed.

Garden surveys are a standard part of the process when buying or selling a house and consist of checking for any damage to your pipework, walls or foundation from the roots of nearby trees.

It’s because stump removal is always better than leaving the stump, even if it looks okay because the damage to your yard adds up over time.

Make sure there are no tree stumps in the border. This will help to give it a natural appearance. Then, you can use plants to create the desired effect – something wild, ornamental or for scent.

Many people don’t like looking at stumps when they are walking around in their garden. That’s why you can get rid of them by using an expert tree stump removal service.

If you can remove the tree stump yourself- great! But if not, you should think about hiring someone to do it so it doesn’t take up more space.

When people think about designing their gardens, it’s important to be creative and think carefully about the space you have available.

Stumps can be havens for fungi and insects.

While the conditions in deadwood are tough, fungi and insects have adapted their life cycles so that their offspring can be equally as hardy. Honey Fungus is a nasty fungus that spreads by sending out thread-like masses (rhizomorphs) and as such, is capable of damaging the roots of nearby perennials and woody plants.

A tree has been cut down but the stump still remained. The stump can cause suckering and root infection. This is now an obstacle to a landscaping project and will need to be removed.

We hope you found this information helpful!…
